Day 16: Hearing God
LISTENING IN THE STORM
READ- Mark 4:35-41
REFLECT- We have certainly had our share of storms this year. That doesn’t even take into account the other difficult things that you might have been facing lately. I don’t know about you, but whenever there is wind and rain I can’t wait for it to be over. Give me sun!
In this story, it seems like it was all about when the storm ceased, the winds calmed down and the waves decreased. We love the Jesus that stills the storms! However, was Jesus any less powerful while the storms raged? When Jesus was stirred out of His peace by the disciples he asked where their faith was. The wind wasn’t an adversary, but it was an opportunity for God to whip up a greater sense of stability in the disciples. The waves weren’t the overwhelming cause of everyone’s demise, but a chance for the peace of God to wash over the disciples like Jesus who was asleep on the cushion. Unfortunately, the disciples didn’t hear God in the storm, they only heard the natural elements. It is interesting that in the midst of the storm, the wind and the waves still heard Jesus.
RESPOND- Instead of viewing the cold, the rain and the storms as what is keeping you from something, listen for what God is speaking to you from the midst of it. Take some time to watch the rain fall and think of God’s blessings pouring over you. Just for a minute, feel the wind and sense the Holy Spirit blowing around you and filling you with His strength.

We are no more in control of the wind and waves than we were of the drought. God knows what he is doing and most of the time we don't. The more we listen the more we can hear and understand. And trust!
